Pathology Section

The pathology section is dedicated to diagnosing the nature, cause, effect and control of diseases in both individual animals and in herds of animals.  The staff process surgical biopsy specimens and necropsies as well as fixed tissues collected from necropsies performed in a clinical, zoo, field or laboratory setting.  Disseminated reports are designed to meet the unique needs of the individual submitter. The necropsy facility can handle animals up to 2 tons. If it is a larger animal or it cannot be transported, the NJ Animal Diagnostic Laboratory can send a pathologist and assistant to perform a field necropsy.

The Pathology Section recently launched the immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.  IHC is a qualitative test that uses antibodies to detect specific antigens or epitopes in formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue sections.  This technique can be employed for advanced tumor diagnostics, with a particular focus on round cell tumors.  IHC technique can also be used to detect viral and bacterial antigens in tissues.
